Urine analysis in children according to Sulkovich
Urinalysis according to Sulkovich refers to high-quality samples. Such an analysis is aimed at detecting calcium in the urine.
Indications
The sample is assigned to pre-determine the presence of calcium in the urine. Also by means of such an analysis, the correctness of the dosage of vitamin D prescribed to the child (when the drug is given for medical purposes and they want to prevent its overdose) is monitored.
Why do I need to control the level of calcium?
Many newborns are given vitamin D as prophylaxis for rickets, which affects the exchange of phosphorus and calcium. However, an excess of vitamin D and calcium is no less dangerous than their lack. With a high concentration of these substances, seizures and bone growth may occur. To the intake of vitamin D did not lead to an overdose, prescribe a sample of Sulkovich.
Special features
The sample is based on the interaction of calcium salts in a child's urine sample when mixed with a Sulkovicha reagent, in which oxalic acid is present. The combination of this acid and calcium salts leads to the appearance of an insoluble sediment, manifested by turbidity of urine. Visually, such clouding is assessed in the pros from a total absence (put a minus) to 4 pluses, meaning turbidity of a very high degree, which appears very quickly.
Since the result is not accurate, it is used as a screening. About urine analysis in children and its types read in another article.
How to collect the analysis?
For this study, collect the morning portion of urine from a child before the first feeding or breakfast. After the child’s genitals are flushed, the urine is collected in a special container, after which the container is delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours.
Training
On the eve of urine collection, the child should not eat sweets, dairy products, food with dyes, greens. He also should not drink mineral water. It is also recommended to exclude on this day a strong physical exertion.
Normal values
The standard of analysis for Sulkovich is the result of “+” or “++”.
Causes of deviations
With a negative sample, conclusions are drawn about the lack of vitamin D and calcium. Also, the test with the indicator "-" is possible with hypoparathyroidism.
If the result of the analysis is represented by three or four plus points, this indicates too much calcium excretion, which may be a symptom of hyperparathyroidism.
