Hemorrhoids in children

Content

A disease such as hemorrhoids is more common in adults, as it is associated with weight lifting, pregnancy, leg varicose disease and other factors that do not apply to children. Does this pathology in childhood happen, how is it manifested and what should be done in the treatment of hemorrhoids in a child?

Can there be hemorrhoids in children?

This disease is more commonly detected in adults, but in childhood hemorrhoids can also occur, although very rarely. Moreover, in children this proctological problem has some peculiarities, and the causes that cause hemorrhoids in a child differ from the factors contributing to the development of this disease in the older generation.

Kinds

  • External. It is an expansion of the veins that are located under the skin of the anus. Such a pathology looks like bluish-purple swellings near the anus.
  • Interior. It causes dilated veins that are located inside the rectum. The resulting nodes begin to emerge from the anus when they become large in size.

What does it look like?

Looking closely at the baby's anus, parents can see the nodule that appears when the pussy strains, and then disappears inside the anus. A small child may be restless at the moment of a bowel movement if he is worried about burning, itching, and other discomfort. Older children can talk about how they feel as if something is interfering in the anus area.

The node may be inflamed, and then the child's temperature rises. In rare cases, a thrombus forms in the node, which is manifested by sharp pain. If bleeding begins at the site, the parents will find blood in their stools.

Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are of different stages; they need to be treated on time.

The reasons

The most common cause of hemorrhoids in children is constipation. Such a problem can occur at any age, even in infants, because the digestive system in children is still imperfect. In schoolchildren, constipation is caused by an unhealthy diet.

In addition to constipation, the following factors lead to the appearance of hemorrhoids in childhood:

  1. Long sitting in a toilet or on a pot. The problem with defecation can be associated not only with constipation, but also with psychological causes (for example, a child cannot poop outside the house). If the baby is planted in a pot at a time, he may sit too long until the urge to feces. At this time, the blood rushes to the pelvis, and an uncomfortable posture prevents its sufficient outflow, which contributes to the development of hemorrhoids.
  2. Long crying. If the baby cries for a long time, this causes an increase in intra-abdominal pressure. As a result, the pelvic vessels overflow with blood.
  3. Lack of mobility. Modern children, especially at school age, move very little. They sit in school, then sit at school and in front of a computer at home. A lack of physical activity and prolonged sitting are factors contributing to the appearance of hemorrhoids.
  4. Congenital hemorrhoidal varicose veins. This rare cause can be detected immediately after the birth of the crumbs - when there is tension, weeping and a bowel movement in the area of the anus, the vein will bulge.
  5. Inflammation or swelling of the large intestine, causing stagnation of blood in the hemorrhoidal veins.

Disease progression

With hemorrhoids, the veins in the rectal area expand and nodes are formed. At first, their size is small, so apparently they are invisible. They gradually increase and can sag from the anus when a bowel movement occurs, as well as during coughing or crying.

As soon as the child stops straining, such nodes are hidden inside the rectum.

If the disease does not begin to be treated at this stage, the nodes begin to fall out without straining, and they do not return back to the intestine, but require manual reduction. In an even more advanced stage, they are not even able to be repositioned, the nodes immediately fall out again.

What to do and how to treat?

For the treatment of hemorrhoids in children, mainly conservative methods are used, except for the situation with congenital varicose veins.

At home

First of all, for effective treatment it is important to eliminate constipation and other factors in the baby that contribute to the stagnation of blood in the pelvis. The child is prescribed suppositories, as well as ointments, but since such hemorrhoids preparations for children are not released, the dosage of the adult should be coordinated with the doctor.

Operation

Surgical treatment is resorted to in cases where conservative methods have not given effect, and the disease has passed into the 3-4 stage. This happens very rarely in childhood, so the operation for small children with hemorrhoids is performed in exceptional cases.

Folk remedies

You can help the child and folk methods, for example, do:

  1. Steam and sessile baths with decoctions oak bark, turns or chamomile;
  2. Lotions from crushed beets, mountain ash or carrots;
  3. Microclysters with warm sea buckthorn oil.

Prevention

To prevent the development of hemorrhoids in a child, parents should:

  • Adjust the baby’s diet so that the child eats regularly, drinks enough water, consumes fruits, cereals, and vegetables in sufficient quantity for his age.
  • To teach a child to defecate properly. Defecation should be quick, without long straining and sitting in the toilet.
  • Provide a child with comfortable conditions when he poops. To do this, choose a convenient pot, install a footrest next to the toilet.
  • Follow the child's acquisition of personal hygiene skills. It is necessary to wipe without pressure, and after stool it is recommended to wash the anus with cool water (this is necessary for normal vascular tone).
  • To enter into the mode of the day of the child physical activity. Let the child do gymnastics, swim, play outdoor games, ride roller skates, go to sports clubs.
  • Monitor the weight of the child, since obese children develop hemorrhoids more often.
