Regidron for children
With vomiting in a child, high fever or frequent loose stools, the risk of dehydration increases. This condition is life threatening, especially if the child is very small, and the symptoms are very pronounced. With the loss of about 10% of the fluid from the tissues, serious changes are already beginning in them, and the loss of 25% of the fluid causes a lethal outcome. To avoid such consequences, it is important to replenish lost fluid in time. Most often, the drug Regidron is used for this. What is this remedy and when is it used?
Indications for use
Rehydron is prescribed in situations where it is necessary to restore the water balance:
- In acute intestinal infections, as soon as the child has had bouts of vomiting or loose stools.
- With increased physical exertion, in order to replenish the minerals and water lost during heavy sweating.
- In cases of heat injury, when the child has lost a lot of water from sweat.
- When food poisoning.
Composition
In the preparation Regidron there are such components:
The name of the component in the composition | Purpose |
Sodium chloride | In everyday life, this substance is known to us in the form of table salt, it compensates for the deficiency of acid lites in the body. |
Sodium citrate | The compound is needed to regulate osmotic reactions and reduce acidity. |
Potassium chloride | The action of this compound is also important for osmotic pressure, but beyond that it resists potassium wastes and regulates the acid-base state. |
Dextrose | This type of carbohydrate provides energy for metabolic processes. |
The mechanism of action on the body
After ingestion, salts in Regidron supplement the electrolytes lost due to vomiting, diarrhea or sweating. This normalizes the blood condition and returns the acid-base balance to it. Due to the content in the dextrose salt salts are absorbed faster and the body receives energy.
Contraindications
Contraindications to the use of this medication are an excess of potassium, renal failure, diabetes. It is impossible to give a solution in case of individual intolerance of its components, as well as in case of impairment of consciousness.
If you do not follow the recommended dosages of Regidron, an overabundance of the elements obtained from it will lead to impaired functioning of the nervous system, muscular weakness, and problems with breathing. These symptoms are caused by a high content of sodium in the blood and can be dangerous for the baby.
Cooking Instructions
The drug is produced in the form of powder, placed in portion bags. One sachet means diluted in one liter of water, which must be boiled. It is advisable to make her temperature close to the temperature of the child’s body so that the product can be absorbed faster.
The powder should be completely dissolved to make the solution completely clear and colorless, without any flakes and suspensions. Also, the solution should not be foreign smell. Its taste should be sweet and salty.
Dosage
Rehydron diluted in water is recommended to start with 5 ml, especially if the child is constantly vomiting. So small portions of medication will not provoke another attack. It is necessary to give in a spoon a means every 10 minutes, gradually increasing a single portion to 10 ml, then to 15 ml and more.
In total, for the first 4-10 hours from the onset of the disease, the child should be given Regidron, from 30 to 50 ml per kilogram of baby weight. Further, while maintaining the symptoms, you can reduce the dosage to 10 ml per kilogram.
Is it worth it to drink infants up to a year?
Not so long ago, Regidron was prescribed to babies from birth, but recently, when new rehydration drugs appeared, pediatricians spoke about the danger of high sodium content in the finished solution of this medicine. In infancy, it is recommended to pay attention to safer analogues, for example, Humana Electrolyte or Touring. However, if the situation is critical, and to restore the balance of water and electrolytes is required quickly, Regidron will cope with this faster than other means.
Storage solution
The drink prepared from Regidron is allowed to be stored in the refrigerator by placing it in the main compartment. In this case, the diluted powder must be used within 24 hours. If after a day the solution is still there, you will have to pour it out and prepare a new batch.
Is it possible to give frozen?
When frozen, the drug does not lose its properties, and since the cold reduces the severity of the gag reflex, there are recommendations to give Regidron frozen. Mom can prepare a solution, make tiny ice cubes of it and give after an attack of vomiting. In this form, it is easier to give the child a remedy. In addition, the remedy will enter the stomach, while a warm solution would cause another vomiting episode. But, of course, it is possible to give saline in this way only to children who already eat solid food.
How to prepare rehydron from improvised means?
It is possible to prepare a solution for the replacement of salts and water, and not from pharmacies, but independently from the ingredients that are in any home. In a liter of water dissolve from 20 to 30 grams of sugar and about 3 grams of salt.
About 2 g of baking soda can also be added to the solution, and 500 ml of water can be replaced with a decoction of raisins or carrots. Read more about these tools in the article about what to give the child during vomiting.
Tips for parents
- It is impossible to add other components to the diluted Regidron, since this will affect the osmolarity of the agent.
- If a baby up to a year refuses to drink the product from a spoon, pour it into the mouth of the baby with a pipette or syringe without a needle.
- Before you give your child another drink, be sure to mix the Rehydron solution.
