Syrup "Halixol" for children: instructions for use
Drugs that contain Ambroxol, called one of the most effective in the treatment of cough with thick sputum. One of such means is “Halixol”. In syrup, this medicine can be used for children of any age. However, before use, you should learn about the dosages allowed for toddlers and the possible negative effect of the drug on the children's body.
Release form and composition
Liquid form "Halixol" is sold in brown glass bottles, closed with a white lid made of aluminum. Inside the vial is 100 ml of syrupy sweet liquid with a strawberry-banana smell. It is transparent, normal without sediment. May be pale yellow or colorless. A plastic dosing cup is attached to the bottle.
The main ingredient of the syrup is ambroxol hydrochloride. This compound is contained in 10 ml of the drug in a dose of 30 mg and supplemented with povidone K90, sodium citrate, sorbitol, water, sodium benzoate and citric acid. To make the medicine easier to take for children, a sweetener (sodium cyclamate) and flavors (banana and strawberry) have been added to its composition.
In addition to the syrup, there is another dosage form of "Halixol." These are tablets that contain 30 mg of the active compound each. This tool can also be used in the treatment of children, but it is contraindicated in patients younger than 5 years. In other forms (capsules, ointments, solution for injections), the drug is not available.
It is sometimes confused with gum medicine. "Holisal"Because of a similar name, but it is a completely different medication.
Operating principle
"Halixol" has expectorant properties. Under the action of its active ingredient, the activity and production of enzymes, which are able to break down the bonds of mucopolysaccharides contained in the sputum, increase. The result of this effect will be a decrease in viscosity and adhesive properties of mucus, as well as its dilution. In addition, the drug stimulates serous cells and increases the volume of the serous component of sputum, which contributes to its more liquid state.
No less valuable properties of "Halixol" are the increased activity of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and the increased production of surfactant.
Indications
The most common reason for the appointment of "Halixol" is bronchitis, in which the child suffers from cough with very viscous sputum. The drug is used in other pathologies of the respiratory system, for example, when:
- pneumonia;
- bronchiectasis;
- bronchial asthma.
Sometimes medication is prescribed for otitis and sinusitis.
Contraindications
Syrup "Halixol" is not prescribed for hypersensitivity to ambroxol or another ingredient of the drug. This tool is also contraindicated in ulcerative lesions of the digestive tract.
If a child has kidney disease, you can give medicine only under medical supervision.
Side effects
During the reception of "Halixol" the child may appear:
- weakness;
- skin rash;
- diarrhea;
- feeling of dry mouth;
- vomiting.

Instructions for use
Reception of "Halixol" is recommended after meals. The medicine is taken in a measuring cup and given to the child, after which it is suggested to drink a large amount of water. This will further facilitate the dilution of sputum. Duration of use depends on the disease.Giving syrup to a child for more than 4-5 days without the supervision of a physician is unacceptable.
The dosage of the drug for patients of different ages is different.
- A child under two years old is given 2.5 ml of “Halixol” twice a day;
- In children 2-5 years a single dose will be 2.5 ml of syrup, but the frequency of use increases to three times a day;
- A 5-2 year old patient is given a medication of 5 ml, the regimen of application is twofold, threefold (determined by the doctor).
- If a child is older than 12 years, in the first few days he is given three times a day with 10 ml of syrup. Then they switch to a double dose in the same dose or reduce a single dose to 5 ml, but continue to use the medicine 3 times.
Overdose and drug interactions
A high-dose syrup can cause diarrhea, nausea, and other dyspeptic symptoms. The first aid for a child with an overdose should be to induce vomiting. If the patient's condition has deteriorated, a medical examination is necessary. As for compatibility with other drugs, "Halixol" is not used with any drugs that suppress the cough reflex. This combination of medications will worsen the sputum production and cause its stagnation.

"Halixol" is sold in pharmacies without a prescription, but the examination of the child before taking syrup is desirable (especially at an early age). The average price of one bottle is 100-110 rubles. It is permissible to keep the medicine in a sealed form at home for up to 5 years from the date of manufacture at a temperature of +15 +25 degrees. After opening, Halixol can be applied for no longer than 4 weeks.
