Nurofen for a nursing mother: instructions for use
During breastfeeding, many women have colds and viral diseases, as their bodies are vulnerable after childbirth, and their immunity is reduced. The result will be a headache, runny nose, fever and other negative symptoms. Usually, anti-inflammatory drugs with a non-steroid structure, for example, Nurofen, are used to combat them.
But during lactation, many drugs are prohibited, and those that are considered relatively safe, require compliance with certain conditions when taking them. Therefore, before you take a pill, syrup or capsule, it is best to consult with your doctor.
How does it work?
The active substance "Nurofen", which is called ibuprofen, has the ability to block the production of specific compounds that trigger a rise in temperature, an inflammatory reaction and pain. Due to this effect, the drug has immediately Three therapeutic effects:
- help with heat and chills when the body temperature rises;
- decrease in the activity of inflammation;
- help with pain syndrome.
Does breastfeeding apply?
According to the instructions and advice of doctors, "Nurofen" can be used in nursing women, but only sporadically and in compliance with the prescribed dosages. Part of the active substance yet penetrates mom's milk and gets to the newborn, so regular intake or use of very high doses is prohibited. If the mother needs to take Nurofen for a long time or in significant dosage, for the duration of the treatment breastfeeding advised to stop.
Most often, the drug is used to reduce body temperature, if a woman has an acute respiratory disease, otitis, sinusitis, flu, and so on. Typically, the reception of "Nurofen" is recommended when the indicator is over +38.5 degrees, and with a slight increase it is worthwhile to limit ourselves to traditional methods, for example, drink tea with raspberries.
“Nurofen” is also in demand as an analgesic, for example, if a nursing mother has a migraine, a tooth, throat, knee or back hurts.
Release form and dosage
One of the advantages of “Nurofen”, noted in many reviews about this medicine, is variety of dosage forms. The most common pills, as the line "Nurofen" includes several types of them. Depending on the action and composition, additional words may be present in their names, for example, “Nurofen Forte” or “Nurofen Express Lady”.
It is necessary to choose this form of medication carefully, since the dosage of ibuprofen per tablet is as 200 mg and 400 mg. In addition, in some preparations there is another active substance. Thus, paracetamol is additionally included in the “Multisimpt” and “Long” tablets. These drugs are permitted during lactation, but should be used under the supervision of a physician.
But in the composition of the tablets "Nurofen Plus" there is codeine, so this medicine is contraindicated for nursing mothers.
With severe pain or a significant increase in temperature, the doctor may prescribe "Nurofen" in capsules. A feature of this form is more quick healing effect in comparison with the tableted medicine, because inside the gelatin capsule there is not a powder, but a liquid core (dissolved ibuprofen is absorbed faster). The dosage of the active ingredient per capsule is 200 or 400 mg.
Separately, we note "Nurofen for children." Under this name are sold three types of drug - candles, tablets and sweet suspension. They are intended for small patients and differ in the color of the package (the box is made in orange-yellow tones). Suppositories are used rectally from 3 months of age. The same age limits are provided for suspensions, and tablets are allowed from 6 years.
Many nursing mothers think that child "Nurofen" safer forms assigned to adults. In fact, the tablets in the orange pack are no different from the same tablets in silver packaging, since they also contain 200 mg of the main ingredient (ibuprofen) in one piece. And so the effect of children's tablets on the body of a woman and an infant will be the same, and all the risks remain.
As for candles, they are not prescribed to adults because of a very low dosage, because in one suppository there are only 60 mg of the active substance. But suspension application breastfeeding justified, because the liquid form allows you to change the dosage, selecting the minimum effective dose, which is impossible to do with tablets and capsules, since they are not divided into parts.
Another form of Nurofen is 5% gel, which acts on the centers of pain and inflammation locally. This tool is in demand with the defeat of the muscles, nerves, joints, ligaments and so on. When breastfeeding it is used with caution, because this type of medicine is contraindicated for children under 12 years of age. The drug is treated with the desired area 2-4 times a day.
How to use?
If a nursing mother needs to drink Nurofen, it is best to clarify its dose and frequency of use with a doctor. Usually recommendations for taking such a drug include following nuances:
- a single dose may be 200-400 mg of the active substance;
- in order to reduce the risk of negative impact, it is necessary to take first half of the dose, and only if the effect is weak, then it can be increased;
- you need to take medicine during meals;
- it is best to take the drug sporadically, and if you need to drink a pill, suspension or capsule again, then you must wait an interval of at least six hours;
- the daily dose of ibuprofen should not exceed 1200 mg;
- the duration of treatment with Nurofen is no more than three days.
Can it hurt?
Sometimes the reception of "Nurofen" causes unpleasant consequences for both the nursing mother and the baby. In women, they may occur due to hypersensitivity to the components of the drug or other contraindications, such as severe liver disease or ulcerative lesions of the stomach. In addition, Nurofen can be harmful if you exceed its dose or take other medicines with it, which are marked in the abstract as incompatible.
The harmful effects of "Nurofen" on the child can occur sleep disorders, change in urine color, allergic rash, restless behavior, impaired stool and other symptoms.
When they appear, you need to refuse to take such a drug and either replace it with an analogue, or temporarily stop breastfeeding and continue treatment.
In the mother's body "Nurofen" can provoke adverse reactions on the part of the nervous system, digestive tract, kidneys or other organs. In this situation, the use of drugs is also stopped.
Analogs
Replacement "Nurofenu" can be any other drug with the same active ingredient, for example, "Mig 400" or "Ibuprofen-Akrihin." Instead of the “Long” and “Multisymptom” tablets, the nursing mother can use the Next, Ibuklin, or Brustan medicines, since they also contain a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol. Any paracetamol preparations, for example, Panadol or Efferalgan, are considered effective analogs at high temperature or pain. All of them are allowed during lactation, but before use it is recommended to consult a doctor.
